On Election Day 2016, voters in the states of Massachusetts, Maine, California, and Nevada moved to legalize the use of recreational marijuana. Florida, Arkansas, and North Dakota approved the use of marijuana for medical purposes. The support for weed is undoubtedly growing; in fact, the number of American adults in favor of its legalization has, in the past decade, doubled to more than 60%.
The fact that so many celebrities are now coming out to champion its legalization could help get this percentage even higher. Let’s face it, seeing our icons and role models puffing on the herb does a lot to change how the public perceives it. We have compiled a list of famous and successful people that are green and proud!
- Snoop Dogg
Or Snoop Lion. Or Snoop Doggy Dog. Snoop Dogg is the global ‘brand ambassador’ of getting high on the herb, and he’s perfect to start this list. In the Netflix documentary Grass is Greener, Snoop shares his experience with marijuana, even speaking about the first time he took a hit. That was back in 1977, and the music icon was barely six years old at the time.
According to Snoop, marijuana has had an incredible impact on musical movements, saying that the plant is something that has always helped artists find their groove and tap into their creativity to bring masterpieces to life. He’d know. Of marijuana, he says: “It’s timeless. There’s something about cannabis that brings out the best out of whoever you are if you tap into your spirit.”
The rapper who once confessed to having “smoked in a bathroom in the White House” launched his own weed line, Leafs By Snoop, back in 2015. It is even said that he has an employee whose entire role is to roll joints for Snoop Dogg!
- Barrack Obama
One of America’s most beloved presidents, too, is a proud proponent of marijuana and has spoken about unwinding over a joint himself. While participating in a discussion at the University of Chicago, Mr. Obama sits with half a dozen young leaders, talking about politics and musing about life. He speaks about smoking weed during his time in college, something he has been known not to shy from. In his book Dreams from My Father, he writes about this period of his life in detail.
However, he does advise against posting videos of you and your buddies taking a big rip off your bong because, you know, the internet never forgets. “If you had pictures of everything I’d done when I was in high school, I probably wouldn’t have been the president of the United States,” he said, amidst wild laughter from the crowd. These comments highlight the intense stigma that is gradually peeling away from this plant that has been loved and loathed in equal measure over the decades.
- Seth Rogen
Oh, don’t try to act surprised. Rogen has written and starred in his fair share of ‘stoner comedies.’ With the actor-slash-comedian-slash-stoner reputation he’s carved out for himself, it stands to reason that Seth Rogen, too, is on this list. In a recent interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he intimated that smoking weed was more than just a hobby for him. Asked whether he’s ever acted while high, he says, “For the last 20 years, exclusively.”
However, Seth Rogen is more than just a habitual weed smoker. Last year, in partnership with his long-time collaborator Evan Goldberg, he set up Houseplant, a Canadian marijuana supplier. With this company, Seth joins Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg, Whoopi Goldberg, and Tommy Chong on the long list of celebrities that have dipped their toes into cannabis-peddling.
- Jay Z
Known worldwide for being hip-hop’s first billionaire, Jay Z is one of the many successful people that have admitted to getting high once in a while. In fact, according to him, getting high on the bud helped him finish writing one of his most legendary singles, Izzo.
Jay Z’s relationship with the herb, however, runs deeper than the occasional toke. In 2016, Hov’ released a short film, The War on Drugs Is an Epic Fail for the New York Times. In 2019, Jay Z joined Caliva, a San Jose weed dispensary, as a brand strategist. He will be responsible for the company’s creative direction and consumer outreach. Since all he touches turns to dollar gold, it is likely that the marijuana dispensary is in for a killing with this icon on their side.
- Whoopi Goldberg
One of America’s most famous actors, Whoopi doesn’t keep her affection for the plant secret. The The View co-host has openly spoken about dealing with glaucoma, and how marijuana helps her combat the pain and discomfort associated with it. According to her, she loves her vape pen so much that she’s given it a name!
“The vape pen has changed my life,” Whoopi writes in the Cannabist magazine. “No, I am not exaggerating. In fact, her name is Sippy… with each sip comes relief- from pressure, pain, stress, discomfort.”
Whoopi Goldberg has joined the cannabis industry by launching a medical marijuana line called Whoopi and Maya that’s dedicated to helping women deal with period pain and other physical discomforts.
- Woody Harrelson
Woodrow Harrelson is an American actor and playwright. He played Woody Boyd, a bartender, on the NBC sitcom Cheers, a role that earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He’s also famous for being a proud stoner.
In September last year’s issue of Esquire magazine, Harrelson mentioned going back to smoking weed after a two-year break, thanks to who else but his friend Willie Nelson. Everyone needs a Willie Nelson in their life!
- Wiz Khalifa
Like Snoop Dogg, marijuana has become embedded into Wiz Khalifa’s personality, and puffing on a blunt is something the rapper has become known for. He is also a brilliant, enterprising mind, with the cannabis strain Khalifa Kush under his name. He also has his own brand of vape pens. According to Wiz, marijuana helps free his mind, slow his thoughts down, and tap into his creative juices. This is a property of the herb that he believes has had a significant impact on his songwriting and music.
He started smoking weed in his teenage years and attributes it to having helped him through high school by making the experience ‘more tolerable.’
- Lady Gaga
Singer- and now actress- Lady Gaga has also been known to have a cordial relationship with the blunt. In a past interview, she mentioned smoking up to 15 marijuana cigarettes each day. The A Star is Born star recently opened up about dealing with fibromyalgia, a disease that seems to stem from an underlying increased sensitivity to pain. For her, marijuana is a source of relief from pain, and this explains why she’s almost always puffing on a spliff in her Netflix documentary, Five Foot Two.
- Morgan Freeman
Yes, that’s right. God smokes weed!
Morgan Freeman, famous for his roles in amazing films like Bruce Almighty and Now You See Me, Now You Don’t has publicly come out to defend the use of marijuana. He has always been in favor of its legalization, having declared in a 2015 interview with the Daily Beast that he lights up whenever he can to help deal with fibromyalgia pain in his left arm.
He says it was introduced to him by his first wife, and that he’d “eat it, drink it, smoke it, snort it…” Don’t we all need this energy?
- Dave Chappelle
Remember the infamous night when Dave Chappelle bombed on stage in the spring of 2015, performing in Detroit? According to the original TMZ report, Dave delivered a ‘slurry, half-baked’ show, ultimately causing angry fans to boo him off stage and call for a refund. Well, in his stand-up special, The Age of Spin: Live at the Hollywood Palladium, the comedic genius narrates what happened on that unfortunate night.
“I don’t know if you ever saw on TMZ, the big headline: ‘Dave Chappelle, Drunk on Stage in Detroit,” he says. “Well, if you saw it, I wasn’t drunk. I had smoked some reefer. I don’t know if you know anything about rappers, but their weed is very strong.” It seems like Dave had more than he could handle!
In another stand-up routine, Dave speaks in detail about the time he found out his son smokes weed, but who knows? Maybe it was for comic effect?
The fact that all these successful people smoke weed shouldn’t be the only reason you start indulging in the herb, though. Cannabis enthusiasts have credited the drug with unlocking one’s creative potential and paving the way for a freer thought process. Since weed is a social drug, it helps bring people together- think about the number of times you’ve unwound over a blunt with your closest friends. Researchers have also found that it can help treat depression and deal with the pain associated with menstrual cramps, among many other health conditions
Considering just how much good marijuana does for your body, it’s no wonder Morgan Freeman embraces it so vigorously!
