You may be asking yourself who would want to grind weed without a grinder? Are we living in the stone age?
News flash, friends. Not everyone has their own weed grinder. And, even if you owned a grinder, you probably wouldn’t carry it with you all the time, right?
So, if you don’t have one on you, is it still possible to grind weed without a grinder?
Shop Accessories SaleWhatever your situation, there’s no need to panic. Our experienced team here at Hoot Supply Co. is going to give you the low-down on how to grind weed without a grinder.
But, first, let’s cover a few basics to help you achieve the best results when grinding your weed.
Before grinding your weed
It’s always important to ensure that your immediate environment is sanitary before grinding your weed. Therefore, before you start, clean and wipe down the surface you are going to work on and wash your hands. Any tools used for grinding should also be cleaned and sanitized properly.
Make sure that you work on a smooth surface without any crevices. This will prevent any bits of weed from falling into crevices that you can’t get them out of. It would be a shame to lose some of your weed in the nooks and crannies of a porous surface. Wouldn’t that be sad after all the effort you’ve had to put in to grind weed without a grinder?
If your bud is very sticky, like our Blue Buddha Indica hybrid, it might be a good idea to let it dry a bit before trying to grind it or break it down. You can either leave the bud out on a windowsill for a bit or put it in the freezer for 30 mins to an hour. Be careful not to dry it out too much, though.
Don’t rush the process by using a dehydrator, oven, or microwave to dry your weed faster. Drying the weed this way will affect the taste and may compromise its efficacy too.
Are there any other precautions to take when adopting these unconventional methods to grind weed without a grinder? Absolutely.
Most importantly, it’s advisable to take it slow. You don’t want to over-compress or grind the weed too finely. Be careful while handling the weed to ensure you get the best possible aggregate for rolling a joint.
Once you’re done breaking your weed down to a desirable size, be sure to clean any tools or surfaces thoroughly. You wouldn’t want to run the risk of having someone else find traces of your weed. You’d also not want to have your Aunty Mavis accidentally ingest any of your premium goods.
Now that we’ve covered some of the basics, let’s dig deeper into the question that’s really on our minds – How exactly do you grind weed without a grinder?
How to grind weed without a grinder if you’re on the move
Break the bud with your hands
What do you think would be the most obvious way to grind weed without a grinder? You got it! Breaking the weed down using your bare hands is probably the most logical approach.
It’s probably not the easiest approach, especially if the bud is really sticky, but at least you won’t need any tools or implements to aid you.
As mentioned above, you will need to find as smooth a surface as possible to break the weed over. This is, understandably, not as easy if you are on the move. But, if you have a book or small container handy, that would be first prize. If not, breaking the bud down in small portions at a time over a credit card or ID card should do the trick.
How to grind weed without a grinder if you’re at home
Cut the weed with a knife
When thinking about how to grind weed without a grinder, this would also be one of the first solutions that pop to mind. Why not, it’s a classic and makes a whole lot of sense.
If you are at home, or at a friend’s house, chances are that you have access to a knife and a cutting board. Make sure that the knife is sharp, to avoid having the stickier weed stuck to it. If you can find a non-serrated sharp knife, it would be optimal.
Cut slowly and methodically and take note of where your fingers are in relation to the knife. Working with a sharp knife can lead to some nasty cuts.
Cut the weed using scissors and a glass
Is cutting your bud up in a glass a good alternative to grind your weed without a grinder? You bet it is.
Many recommend using a shot glass and small pair of grooming scissors for this method. But a larger drinking glass and standard-sized scissors will be just as effective.
Place your Alien Dawg Indica weed, fresh from our dispensary, loosely in the glass. Then, place the sharp end of the scissors in the glass. Open and close the scissors to cut the bud into pieces.
The more you cut, the smaller the pieces will be. So, keep an eye on your progress and stop when the bits of weed are at your desired size. Stirring the weed every now and then will expose any large chunks you may have missed.
Grind the weed with a grater or zester
Chances are that you probably have access to a grater or zester at home.
I hear you asking, “A zester? Is that going to be a suitable replacement to grind weed without a grinder?”
Using a grater or zester to break down your bud is pretty effective and easy. You would approach it in the same way as you would grating cheese or zesting the peel of a lime.
The sharper the grater or zester, the better. But, be careful not to nick your fingers on those openings.
Your stickier bud is going to be a bit of a pain to grind with this method, though. We would advise drying your Cookies & Cream hybrid bud out a little bit before getting started.
Grind the weed using a container and coin
Ever heard of this classic method to grind your weed without a grinder? It’s used by many veteran smokers and is great for breaking down both dry and sticky weed.
All you’ll need is a small container, such as a pill bottle or old camera film canister, and a dime or penny-sized coin. Make sure that the container has a secure lid to avoid any spillage.
Fill approximately ¾ of the container with your bud and place the coin inside. Close the container, making sure the lid is on tightly, and shake away.
It’s best to open the container and check on the size of the pieces of weed every 2 minutes or so. This will help to avoid breaking the bud down too much.
Are there other ways to grind weed without a grinder?
Not happy with the above recommendations, but still looking for an easy way to grind your weed without a grinder? We’ve got a few more suggestions for you.
If you have access to more appliances, the following may be suitable options for you when looking to grind your weed.
Grind the weed with a coffee grinder or blender
A coffee grinder or blender is probably the closest you are going to get to replicating the output of a weed grinder. Using either of these is an easy approach but cleaning them afterward is not going to be fun.
That said, a coffee grinder or blender is going to produce results really quickly. It will also give you the option to grind larger quantities if you’re looking to make some edibles with the weed.
We recommend pulsing for a few seconds at a time, so you can keep a close eye on the size of your pieces of weed. Finely ground weed is great for edibles but will make rolling a joint difficult.
We would advise using the coffee grinder over the blender, but if a blender is all you have then blend away.
Grind the weed with a mortar and pestle
This method may seem a bit old school to you but think about it for a second. A mortar and pestle are made to grind herbs! So, it’s actually the perfect tool for the job, if you have one lying around.
It’s important not to try and grind too much weed at once. You want to leave yourself some room to move the weed around.
Place a bud in the mortar, which is the bowl section of the apparatus. Then, use the larger blunt end of the pestle, which is the grinding tool, to crush the bud against the inside surface of the mortar.
Be warned that this method is not going to be suitable for stickier types of weed. You will need to dry your weed as much as possible before using a mortar and pestle to grind it.
The longer you crush the bud, the smaller the pieces will be. So, stop crushing when you are happy with the average size of the pieces in the bowl.
Make your own weed grinder
What if you didn’t have to grind your weed without a grinder? What if you could make your very own grinder instead?
It’s actually super easy to make your own DIY weed grinder to carry around with you. You’ll need a small tin flat tin can, similar to the tins that contain chew tobacco, chest rub ointment, or balm. You’ll also need a few sturdy thumbtacks.
Make sure that the tin and thumbtacks are thoroughly clean. Next, pierce the tin with the thumbtacks at the top and the bottom. You’ll need to space the tacks apart so that, when you twist the lid of the tin, they don’t collide with each other.
Once your thumbtacks are in, place your weed inside the tin, close it, and twist the lid around like a regular weed grinder. You’ll find that this method yields similar results to that of grinding with an actual weed grinder.
No matter the bind you find yourself in, with the above information at hand, you’ll always be able to figure out how to grind your weed without a grinder.
